Project Management Assessment

The purpose of the project management assessment is to analyze the project and portfolio management processes utilized within your organization and compare those processes to industry best practices. To gain an accurate and comprehensive depiction of how project and portfolio management is performed within your organization, VPMI conducts a 3-fold analysis that consists of

(1) interviews with key personnel to gain a qualitative picture of how project and portfolio management is performed throughout the company,

(2) a review of commonly utilized processes, procedures and artifacts to compare alignment with best practices

(3) a review of existing deliverables to evaluate the quality and maturity of work product being generated from your project and portfolio management processes.

Throughout these phases of the analysis, six areas of project management are targeted. These areas include:

1. Organization and Culture

2. Initiation

3. Planning

4. Execution

5. Control

6. Communication, Documentation & Metrics

By focusing on these six areas, our team is able to analyze how each department within your organization utilizes project and portfolio management throughout the different stages of the project lifecycle.

Each area consists of three subsections:

1. Ideal State – describing how a company would operate if they followed industry best practices.

2. Current State – describing the company’s current state of operations and highlights those areas that are different from the ideal state.

3. Desired State– describing the company’s desired future state of operations based on tailored best practices aligned with business objectives.

A project & portfolio management assessment can benchmark your existing policies, procedures and competencies against best industry standards, while also providing targeted next steps that offer the highest return on your investment and the greatest likelihood for success.

Outcome of the Assessment

At the conclusion of the assessment, VPMI will summarize our findings with a formal written analysis of the current state of project and portfolio management maturity, including expert insight into both strengths and weaknesses. These written findings can be supplemented with a PowerPoint presentation to executive stakeholders for additional context.
